school author visits n.s. blackman, author-illustrator
One of the best parts about being a children's author is that I get to visit schools! It's wonderful to be able to share my love of reading and writing - inspiring children to read for pleasure. My visits are suitable for reception to year 6 and based on either my Secret Dinosaur series (great for engaging children) or Freedom for Bron which enriches KS2 history teaching. I visit schools all over the UK and I am lucky to have had lovely feedback from teachers, which you can read below. My visits are very interactive, encompassing quizzes, role-play, on-the-spot drawing and creative writing tips. Activity sheets for follow up work,or for use prior to the visit can be downloaded for free.

Teachers and librarians say that my visits encourage pupils to read - due to a combination of an exciting visit and the fast-paced, engaging books. Visits can include whole-school assemblies followed by workshops for individual classes. I bring exciting props. such as my "dinosaur tooth" and "saxon sword" and like to get the children fully engaged in drawing, answering questions and creating stories. Children love to see how my illustrations developed as I wrote the books so I display my pictures on the interactive whiteboard and talk through my characters and story ideas. Classroom activity booklets, based on my work and linked to the curriculum at KS1 and KS2, are available to download for free (take a look using the links on this page) and can be really useful if you are teaching the dinosaur or Saxon topic. I also bring activity sheets for use during a visit and every school booking a dinosaur visit also receives a signed, beautifully illustrated Secret Dinosaur poster.
Academic Approval I am very proud that The Secret Dinosaur was selected by the experts at Hodder Education to be used as an English comprehension exercise their Primary Literacy Course. The textbook features only the very best children's authors including Michael Morpurgo and Roald Dahl, so The Secret Dinosaur is in good company! The series is perfect for emergent and confident readers in KS1 and KS2 and have been particularly successful at encouraging reading for pleasure. They are illustrated throughout with beautiful black and white drawings and they have been praised by teachers and librarians for being a great read aloud and appealing to both keen and reluctant readers. The series has a dedicated fan website (run by me!) where I put reviews, and also pictures, activity sheets and feedback from children. You can also read reviews from parents and teachers on Amazon UK - both for the Secret Dinosaur series and Freedom for Bron. Teacher Recommended Author Visits "Feedback from children has been superb" Headteacher, King's Prep School, Rochester "His assembly and workshops were tailored perfectly to the age group. Feedback from children has been superb." Headteacher, King's Prep School, Rochester "The children were engaged and focused throughout and it really got their ideas flowing. Literacy coordinator, Dulwich College, London "He was wonderful. The children really enjoyed his talk and drawing lessons." Manager, City of Hull School Library Service "The best author visit we have had. The children loved it and it has raised aspirations." KS2 Leader, St Andrews School, Kettering. "We have children of all abilities and today I saw two of our boys focused in a way they have never done before. Thank you!" KS2 Team Leader, Lewannick Primary School, Cornwall About Me
My books have been short listed for awards and praised by Hodder Education, The School Librarian Journal and teachers across the UK. In addition to being an author and illustrator, I also teach creative writing. Apart from writing and drawing one of my biggest passion is Dr Who! I have two chidren and I live in London, with my family. Natural History Museum The Natural History Museum in London invited me recently to take part in its celebration of the famous 'dippy' diplodocus skeleton. It was a wonderful event to take part in - I hosted my Secret Dinosaur illustration and writing workshop in the museum's main hall, a great pleasure and honour! Following enthusiastic feedback from parents and children, The Natural History Museum's flagship bookshop now stocks my Secret Dinosaur series. Hull, London, Los Angeles...and beyond! Freedom for Bron was shortlisted for the KS2 Hull Children's Book Award, so last summer I got to visit Hull during its year as City of Culture. The teachers, parents, librarians and children were absolutely fizzing with energy and creativity, it was a real treat to be there. Meeting young readers, whether or not they know my books is a such a privilege. As well as Hull, author tours have taken me to Los Angeles, Bristol, Birmingham and of course all around my home town of London. Outstanding Book Reviews

Secret Dinosaur visits are suitable for children in Reception, KS1 and LKS2 while Freedom for Bron visits are suitable for children in KS2. I am happy to visit for a half day or a whole day and do a variety of talks, classroom tours and workshops based on dinosaurs, Saxons or both!
